Billing Codes

About Billing Codes

A free tool for tracking changes to Australian government health billing schedules.

What it is

Billing Codes is a web application that monitors five Australian government health billing schedules — the Prescribed List, Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS), NDIS Support Catalogue, DVA Schedule of Fees, and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) — and makes changes between versions easy to find and track.

Why it exists

Government health schedules are published as PDF documents and large Excel files. When a new version is released, identifying exactly what changed — which codes were added, removed, or had their fees adjusted — requires manual comparison. Billing Codes automates that process and presents changes in a searchable, readable format, with optional email alerts when items you care about are updated.

Data sources

  • · Prescribed List — Department of Health and Aged Care
  • · MBS — Medicare Benefits Schedule, Department of Health
  • · PBS — Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, Department of Health
  • · NDIS — NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission Support Catalogue
  • · DVA — Department of Veterans' Affairs Schedule of Fees

Update frequency

We process and load new data after each official government release. The frequency varies by schedule — the Prescribed List and PBS are updated monthly, MBS and NDIS quarterly, and DVA annually. The What's Changed page always reflects the most recently loaded version.

Who built it

Billing Codes is an independent tool. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by any Australian government body. All schedule data remains the property of the respective government departments and is reproduced here for informational purposes only.
